Facciamo musica con Fra’ Martino
Making the illustrations for this book was special for me.
Not only because this is my first publication as an illustrator, but above all because I was able to contribute with my skills to the realization of a project, putting the character imagined by Silvia Angiolini on paper.
All started with a conoscitive phone call, first presenting ourself and then talking about the project and sharing ideas and thoughts about it. After we decided to work together and we agreed on the number of illustrations, the style and delivery times, the next step was the sketching. First of all I drew the character of Fra’ Martino offering different types of customization. And then, having already decided together what Fra’ Martino could have done in each images, I made one or two pencil drafts for each illustration. Once all the sketches were done and approved, I create the final digital illustrations.
There are 16 illustrations in the book, one for each of the 14 musical tracks (which are actually 28) that are present on the CD or listenable in streaming, and two more illustration: one for the cover (but finally used for another section) and the second for the conclusions.
The musical track of the famous song “Fra’ Martino Campanaro” are created with Silvia’s voice and arrangements by Davide Tagliapietra, and every track are linked to a specific musical mode, genre, instruments, and “mood” that I recreate in the illustration, using the background color and changing elements around Fra’ Martino, like clothes, musical instruments and other objects.
I was very happy for the relationship of trust that was created with Silvia, a precise professional who paid attention to all the details (after all like me) and seeing this book published was a real thrill.
